Talking about languages

During German lessons via Skype, the focus is on conversation, almost automatically by the nature of the medium. But what is there to talk about? Current topics about culture and society are very popular. So, for example, you could talk about the European Day of Languages. This action day, which is celebrated every year on September 26, was initiated by the Council of Europe. Its aim is to contribute to the appreciation of cultures and languages and to raise awareness of the benefits of language skills. Here are some facts:

  • Worldwide, there are about 2,500 to 10,000 languages, 200 languages in Europe alone
  • Linguists distinguish between:
    • Dwarf languages that are spoken by fewer than 1000 people, for example, Cornish in the English county of Cornwall
    • Smaller languages that have up to a million speakers, such as Basque, Gaelic and Sorbian (up to 60,000 speakersin eastern Germany
    • Languages with native speakers in the millions, such as Hungarian or Finnish
    • World languages which are spoken by more than 100 million each, including English, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Portuguese and French.
    • The world's number one language is Mandarin Chinese with 1.2 billion native speakers
    • The next ranks are occupied by: English (573 million speakers), Hindi (418 million), Spanish (352 million).
    • German, with 101 million native speakers, is in twelfth place. Thus, the German language is just beyond the world language threshold.

Questions that you might talk to your teacher about:

  1. Why is it important to speak foreign languages?
  2. What is your experience with foreign languages?
  3. Do you remember a strange or funny situation with a foreign language?
  4. What languages do you speak? What language do you like and why?
  5. Which language would you still like to learn and why?
